As our families and swimmers head into the busiest pool season of the year, we here at Nitro Swimming support May as National Drowning Prevention Month. We’re going to be spending some extra time in the next few weeks with all stations about the importance of water safety — but we can’t do it alone, we need your help.

Swimmers, who are comfortable and confident in our pool, don’t typically see any harm or potential threat from water environments. If you go to your neighborhood pool, friends’ houses, or especially if you have a pool at home — here are a couple tips to help your swimmers be more safe:

Identify Potential Risks

Help survey the environment

Shallow vs. deep water

Safe entry/exit areas

Lifeguard location

Review Safety– Before playtime can start, have your swimmer(s) show you their safety skills:

Safely enter/exit the pool

Survival float — jump in and roll over onto their back to float

Treading Water

Jump + Recover to the wall

Assign a “Water Watcher”– A responsible person should always be watching active swimmers in the water.

We have “Water Watcher” wristlets available at our front desk — please pick one up to keep in your pool bag this summer!

Swimmers of the Week for May 7th – 12th:

Intro to Nitro

CedarPark:Austin Alaspa- Austin has been a great student never giving up on himself and becoming more and more confident with each practice. This past week we have had a few new swimmers join our classes, Austin was in a lane with a new swimmer and without hesitation took it upon himself to help the new teammate feel welcome. He explained how to watch the clock and also gave some personal advice about flip-turns and magic numbers. It was really great to see someone in class so willing to help and make new friends. Austin has also been getting consistently stronger in the water and his drive to do better is relentless! Austin, keep doing what you are doing buddy! Thank you!

BeeCave: All Intros that swam at the races this weekend- I am very proud of my entire Intro to Nitro swimmers that braved the long coarse meet last weekend. The pool being set up in long coarse fashion can be very intimidating and the majority of them have never swam a complete 50 without stopping. That being said there are two kiddos in particular that were especially courageous, Megan Buck and Tucker Taylor. Megan and Tucker haven’t been with the Intro to Nitro’s for very long, but they both challenged themselves tremendously. Congratulations!

Bronze

CedarPark :Vincent Rubiero- Vincent has really stepped up to the front of the Bronze group and we want to recognize his great work ethic and positive attitude. The coaches were most impressed at Friday evening’s practice when (without complaint or a second thought) he did 8x25s butterfly and lead his lane, as the rest of the group completed the set with fins. With three 25s to go, I noticed he was rocking it out, equipment-free. The coaches were floored! Vincent is cheerful and conscientious and we appreciate his adaptive attitude. Keep up the good work!

BeeCave:All Meet Goers!- I want to applaud the Bronze group on a great meet weekend. I thought the group swam well but, beyond that, I thought you really “showed up”. At the Nitro at the Races, I saw good swimming, great attitudes and loads of fun and that’s what meets are all about! Keeps that feeling going right into practice!

Technique and Fitness

CedarPark : All Nitro at the Races Attendees- Great job to all those attending the meet this weekend, ALL of you are my Swimmers of the Week. Great job, thanks for being a part of NITRO, see you at the pool!

BeeCave:Faryal Jabbar- She has finally conquered the flip turn after months and months of trying. She is nice and friendly to everyone in her group. And she has been working really hard and the results are showing in the pool. Keep up the great work!

Silver

Cedar Park:Kelly Digby- Kelly had a great meet in San Antonio this past weekend, setting personal best in all her events, even swimming one without goggles! She has done a good job recently in practice working on the little things to improve her swimming, and it’s starting to show. Great job Kelly!

BeeCave:Aidan Henry- Aidan has a strong desire to succeed in swimming. He proves that every day at swim practice as he works very hard, listens to & applies feedback, and is a leader in his lane. Aidan expresses his desire to move up levels in swimming & is working towards it daily. Keep up the great work Aidan!

Advanced Silver

CedarPark :Raavi Chokhawala- Not only was it Raavi’s birthday this week, but she’s been swimming at the head of her lane every day! Her effort and energy level has been fantastic. Keep it up Raavi!

BeeCave:Annie Von Doersten- Advanced Silver had a great week! What made it great was not just the effort being put in but, the teammate support that I heard while swimmers were on the walls. Annie really leads the way with her support and encouragement of the swimmers around her. She has been battling a knee injury that has kept her pulling much of the time, but that didn’t stop her great attitude and contribution to the group. She is loud and proud and contributes to a fantastic atmosphere that can be felt exuding from this group. Keep it up Annie!

Gold

CedarPark :Anthea Gonzalez - Anthea has been working her tail off this past week very deserving of this award, having worked from the beginning of the week and every single day thereafter. She impressed the entire group by leading the training group during a set of 100s Backstroke and the next day being a leader on our 10x200s Set. Keep up the great work Anthea!

BeeCave:Gavin Moak- Gavin trains like an animal. We are in the middle of tough training and Gavin never ever gives up. At the end of a long, tough set, he is one to push it past his comfort level & become greater. Gavin is consistently asking questions for how he can become better. I can’t wait to see what the rest of the season has in store for him. Keep up the great work Gavin!

Swimmer of the Week for April 30th – May 5th:

Intro to Nitro

Cedar Park:Jaylin Dubose - Jaylin, being newer to Intro she is really shining. She has done great with each new set we have given her, this past week we worked on body rotation for our backstroke. The drills were challenging and required a bit of active thinking, but Jaylin grasp the concepts and gave her best. She maintained great head position while focusing on her body rotation during the drills and again in her regular backstroke swimming. Keep up the great work Jaylin, it is working for you!

Bee Cave:Livia Woolery & Maily Nguyen- Livia and Maily are both relatively new girls to our Intro to Nitro group. They have both been improving so rapidly that I couldn’t just pick one this week. Livia is a kind little girl who always works hard and tries very hard to do all the drills correctly. Maily is a sweet and funny girl that has excellent instincts in the water. She is already one of my best demonstrators after only 3-4 weeks with us. Both girls are great listeners and a joy to have on the pool deck. Keep up the great work girls!

Bronze

Cedar Park:Neha and Megha Siddapureddy- Twins Megha and Neha recently joined the Bronze group from Intro, by way to TF, and have totally blown the coaches away! They are rocking any and every set given to them, always while maintaining impeccable stroke technique. Both ladies have a great feel for the water, which makes their pint-size deceiving to teammates. “Small but mighty” is what we’ve come to learn about both Megha and Neha. Great work ladies, thank you for your can-do attitudes and cheerful smiles. Keep up the great work!

Bee Cave:Kylie Vandermeer- Kylie always has a smile on her face. She listens and responds well to the coaches. This week we went back and worked on some diving basics and Kylie really took to it providing me with some examples for some of her fellow swimmers. Keep up the great work Kylie!

Technique and Fitness

Cedar Park:Alyson Jia, Wiley Unruh, Abby Hawes & Diego Ortega– The first two swimmers are a great addition to the NITRO team. They bring great energy to the pool, and attitudes to match. We have seen some great technique from these two, over the past few weeks. As for Abby and Diego after many weeks working on timing and technique, we are beginning to see great advances with these two. Diego is nailing his streamline kicking on his back, and Abby has really improved on her breaststroke.

Bee Cave:Avi Li- Avi comes to practice with a huge smile on his face. His presence gives this group high energy. Since he has joined our team huge strides have been taken in his freestyle. Keep up the great work Avi!

Silver

Cedar Park:Sarah Waters- Sarah has been very consistent over the last few months, doing her best to make stroke corrections and working hard to get the most out of the practices. Sarah is a lot of fun to have in the group!

Bee Cave:Grace Vu- Grace is continuously working hard, and understanding how to go faster using better stroke technique. In particular, her breaststroke has improved tremendously since the UT meet. It is wonderful to see her at competition meets! She puts her coaches’ words into action, and she gets instant results! Way to go, Grace!

Advanced Silver

Cedar Park:Helena Hurtado- Helena has been fantastic at practice all week, working very hard, making new intervals and generally swimming out of her mind. It’s been very exciting to watch and we can’t wait to see all of the hard work pay off!!

Bee Cave:Lara McKennon- Lara has really stepped up her training in recent weeks and this week was no exception. She has a great attitude at practice and leads by example among her peers. At the meet this weekend Lara got her leg stuck in the bulkhead. She handled it like a champion and swam the rest of the meet like nothing had happened. Way to go Lara! Great concentration and determination. Keep it up!

Gold

Cedar Park: Anissa Chan- Anissa just turned 13 this past week and right away swam her first meet as 13 year old this weekend, meaning she had to swim the later sessions on both days, she figured out there is a significant difference between swimming as a 12 and under compared swimming with the 13 and over crowd. She handled it like a Champ and was still extremely competitive in all of her heats and improved her times. Very proud of you Anissa keep up the hard work!

Bee Cave:Swimmers that went to San Antonio Meet- After long, hot days, these kids stepped up and swam their hearts out, with a lot of best times. I am proud of these kids and see progress every time they swim…whether at practice or at a meet. Keep up the great work!

Nitro Swimmer of the Week for April 23rd – 28th:

Intro to Nitro

Cedar Park: Anna Sanchez - We have been working very hard on butterfly and finding the right timing, Anna has risen above the expectations and impressed us all. Her hard work and dedication to swimming is easy to see when she is listening in class and more so when you see her put it to use in the water. Last week I challenged the kids to do a drill; 4 body waves with arms up, then pulling them down and doing 3 more body waves arms at their side, finishing it off with throwing their arms back to the front over the water with continuous body waves. This is a tough concept to understand and even more so when you are so young, but Anna rose to the occasion and did it flawlessly! Keep up the Fabulous work Anna!!

Bee Cave: Katherine “Laney” Kalsu – Laney has really been working on her listening skills in the last few weeks and it has really shown in her practices. She has been taking the initiative to ask the coaches questions or to just explain the drill again if she doesn’t understand something. Laney is also a great team mate. She is always happy to be at the pool working hard and is always nice to all her team mates. Great job Laney!

Bronze

Cedar Park: Karsten Olsen – Karsten has made some significant strides in his training over the last few weeks. We’re so proud of his solid technique and intrinsic motivation to do it right every time. Thanks for being part of the Bronze group, Karsten. You’re a terrific swimmer and a great kid! Keep up the good work!

Bee Cave: Hannah Griesmer – Hannah is a constant at Nitro. She is always smiling and eager to get better. She works hard in the water but also likes to have fun. She knows that swimming is about enjoyment as much as it is about discipline and hard work. Keep up the great work Hannah!

Technique and Fitness

Cedar Park: Alyson Jia & Wiley Unruh - These two swimmers are a great addition to the NITRO team. They bring great energy to the pool, with attitudes to match. We have seen some great technique from these two, over the last few weeks. Great job you two, keep up the good work, thanks for being a part of NITRO, and we’ll see you at the pool.

Bee Cave: Isabelle Saquing – Little Isabelle shows up to practice with a tremendous amount of respect and discipline in the pool. Lately she has really stepped up her game during practice and the other swimmers are feeding off of it. She may be a little shy at times but her swimming speaks enough for her. Huge improvements in streamline work and backstroke. Keep up the great work!

Silver

Cedar Park: Avery Chan – Avery has done a great job improving his swimming since coming back from an injury. He swam really well at the UT Kickoff meet and is making his back to a high swimming level. Bright future for Avery this summer, keep up the hard work!

Bee Cave: Olivia Mazzei – Olivia has been making big improvements every week at swim practice because of her strong desire to learn & swim faster! She is a fun loving, energetic kid, which makes it so easy to coach her! Keep up the great work Olivia!

Advanced Silver

Cedar Park: Nick Nerhood & Kim-Nhi Ngo – Nick has made great strides in his streamlining and underwater swimming this week. He’s consistent every time he pushes off the wall and it’s starting to pay off! Kim-Nhi found her stride in practice this week, who knew she was a distance freestyler? She was outstanding in each and every freestyle set we did all week. Great job Nick and Kim-Nhi!

Bee Cave: Evan Margiotta – Evan is a new addition to the advanced silver group having just moved up from silver a month ago and, I must say, he has really taken to the spirit of the group. Both he and Ethan Bernice are National Junior Honor Society hopefuls and I love having swimmers in the group who are balancing their athletics with their scholastics and are looking to achieve excellence in both. Keep up the great work!

Gold

Cedar Park: Max Jones – Max has really worked as hard as he possibly could over the past few weeks, he makes everyone smile but he knows exactly when to pay attention and focus on the task at hand. On top of all his swimming success this weekend he finished first in his age group at triathlon. Super proud of his swimming over the past few weeks.

Bee Cave: Elizabeth Padon – Elizabeth is one of the hardest workers our Gold group has. She never misses an interval or miscounts a set. Her attitude is always positive & happy. She is a born leader & excels in any task she is given! Elizabeth is a joy to coach. Keep up the great work Elizabeth!

Swimmer of the Month for April:

Cedar Park

High School Training: Seon O’Grady – Since joining the group Seon has done a great job improving her swimming proficiency, and learning more and more what she is capable of. She works extremely hard from warm-up through warm down, and is a great addition to the group. Looking forward to what she will do in the coming weeks at swim meets. She is setting herself up for an outstanding summer and fall. Keep on keeping on Seon!

TAGS 2: Rae Lynn Friesz - Rae has done a great job this season, staying focused on her goals and putting together solid workouts on land and in the water. A string of great sets leads to a great workout, and a string of great workouts lead to a great season, so Rae is set up for a great summer!

TAGS 1: Nick Milikich – Nick has attended 100% of the TAGS1 practices for April and consistently works hard at every practice.

Senior: Tyler Smits – Tyler recently moved into our group, up from the Gold group and has really taken the move as an opportunity to grow. Tyler regularly steps up to the challenge of the Distance group when we split up to train and we, as coaches have been really impressed with his efforts day in a and day out. Thanks for making the group better, Tyler!

Sectional: Gus Whiteman, Kathleen Rousset & Meaghan Rousset – Gus had a great meet at the TXLA Kick-Off meet. He swam seven events and had seven best times and won two events in his age group. Gus got both Sectional cuts in his 100 & 200 Backstroke. Gus has demonstrated an ever increasing work ethic and generally leads a lane through long sets. Gus is starting to “get it” that he is a talented swimmer and has a future at the national levels of swimming. It was just a great month for Gus. At the TXLA meet both Meghan and Kathleen made sectional cuts in the 200 Breaststroke, finished in the top eight with some very talented national qualifiers. The twins bring their best effort every night. I feel very fortunate to get to watch these two young breaststrokers as they develop into national level swimmers. They seem to get better almost every night in the pool. Nitro has had some great breaststrokers like Zach Gunn and Sydney Tan who had great feel for the water and these two young ladies are right in that mold. They both appear to be mild mannered young women but neither likes to lose to each other or anyone else.

Bee Cave

Senior 2: Jarod Sargent – Another newcomer to Nitro who had a great first month of practices. Steadily working himself back into shape, Jarod exhibited great persistence as he accepted various challenges in practices. Welcome to Nitro & keep it up!

Senior 1/TAGS: Maggie Taylor – Welcome to Nitro Maggie Taylor! Outstanding first meet with us at UT preceded by some eye popping practices. Great work Maggie & welcome!

National Group Swimmer of the Month for April: Maddie Edwards is our winner for April as Maddie really turned up her training a few notches while maintaining her first month of perfect attendance. It is very obvious to the swimmers and coaching staff when a swimmer really takes their overall training and performance level up—- as it can be seen in attitude, demeanor, confidence and actual training and racing results. Maddie has her sights set on Omaha and being a student-athlete at a great university and this month it was clear for all to see she is on a mission. Great job Maddie—keep it up and bring others with you!

Intro to Nitro

Cedar Park:Ava Werner- Ava is a hard little worker and doesn’t give up on herself, ever! She listens carefully to the directions about the sets we are doing, then you can see her processing the information while waiting for her number on the clock. Once she starts going she works out the kinks and winds up with great looking body waves on her back! Not to mention Ava always has a smile on her face. Keep up the great job you are doing Ava!!

Bee Cave:Athena Luo & Simon Becker. Athena and Simon are my awesome leaders of their groups, and I could not just pick one of them this week. These two are my go-to kiddos for drill demos, kicking demos, kind words, ect. I know I can always count on them to listen well and to be continually working hard. Athena is the quiet kind of leader, leading by example, and a kind word. Simon is the high energy leader that naturally encourages everyone around him to work harder. Keep up the great work you two!

Bronze

Cedar Park: Addison Porch- Addison has been extremely diligent and consistent in everything she does during practice. She not only listens to the instructions but she asks questions to better understand what we are working on. Every time she is at practice she is working as hard as possible and fun to have at practice.

Bee Cave:Shaye Ladzinski- Shaye comes into practice with an enormous amount of energy and competitive spirit. She has come a long way since she has joined Nitro. Not only has her family noticed her improvement but the coaches as well. Shaye will be a great leader for her Belterra Marlins Summer League Team. Shaye keep up the great work, we are all proud of you!

Technique and Fitness

Cedar Park:Alicia Perez & Sam Damon - Alicia comes to our Saturday morning practices, and has been swimming with NITRO a bit longer than the others. She is always game, when I ask her to volunteer and demonstrate some swimming, for the newer guys. Sam started fairly recently, and was a bit overwhelmed with all the terminology. Last week we saw Sam, asking questions, and beginning to understand the NITRO concepts. Great job you two, thanks for bringing your impressive swimming, great attitudes, and high energy to the pool. Thanks for being a part of NITRO, and we’ll see you at the pool.

Bee Cave:Olivia Spedale- She arrives to practice with a giant smile and great attitude. Over the past few weeks we have been working with her backstroke. Her hard work and patience has translated to her being one of the top backstrokers in the group. Great job Olivia, keep up the great work.

Silver

Cedar Park:Adam Micek - Adam has developed a great deal of swimming skill and stamina since joining the group in the Fall. It is mostly due to his hard work and competitive drive. We love to see Adam take the lead in his lane when we need a good clock-reader and someone who understands what we are working on. Adam has also jumped into competition, swimming in about 1 meet a month and doing a great job in competition- even long course! Way to go, Adam!

Bee Cave:Avery McCrory- Avery has been working so hard on improving technique & has made HUGE improvements every week. At the UT meet, she won just about every heat she was in, and showed off her new & improved stroke techniques! Congratulations Avery! Keep up the great work!

Advanced Silver

Cedar Park:Thomas Shomper- From all that I heard he was the most focused swimmer at the meet this weekend, which resulted in his second TAGS cut (and first one long course!). Great job Thomas! And a great job to all who participated in the first long course meet of the season.

Bee Cave:Emily Ownby- Emily has returned to us after taking a few months off and we are glad to have her back. Getting back into swimming is never easy and with Advanced Silver continuing to increase the workout intensity, we certainly haven’t made it any easier. That said, Emily has attacked the workouts with gusto and it won’t be long before she is back in the swing of things. Emily is always a pleasure on deck and in the water. Keep up the great work Emily!

Gold

Cedar Park: The Long Course Kick-Off Attendees- Our swimmers at the meet this weekend did a great job swimming 90% best times throughout the entire meet, it was fun to watch swimmers drop several seconds every time they hit the water. We look forward to doing it again several weeks from now.

Bee Cave:Ben Olsen- Ben has been making big improvements in technique at practice lately. He demonstrated his improved technique with very fast swimming at the meet this weekend! Excellent job Ben!

Swimmer of the Week for April 9th – 14th

Intro to Nitro

Cedar Park:Anirud Kashyap- Anirud has been quite impressively accurate when answering questions in class. Whether it be a question of what kind of turn do we do for a 50 butterfly/backstroke, how many lengths of the pool is a 75, or what does the IM order stand for and what is it? He knows all the answers and can back it up while he is swimming! There is no hesitation for him as he gets to the wall with a great two hand touch, he pushes off using the “elbow your brother call your mother” turn, pushing his belly button up to the ceiling and into a streamline on his back for backstroke! Way to go Anirud and keep up the great work!!

Bee Cave:Sarah Menefee- Sarah had a tremendous week last week, were everything just came together completely. She has been consistently working very hard on her technique and it just had not come together until last week. It is very cool to see soo some much improvement happen in just 2-3 practices. I can’t wait to see what she does next week. Keep up the awesome work Sarah! The coaches are very proud of you!

Bronze

Cedar Park:Katie Law- Katie recently came to Bronze from a TF group and since her time joining our group, she has consistently impressed the coaches with her attention to detail and willingness to fine-tune her skills. Katie takes direction very well and is always open to hearing stroke corrections. On top of all this, she has settled quite comfortably into the front of whatever lane she is placed in. At this rate, even though she’s only been with us for about a month, Katie may very well swim right on through to Silver before too long! Keep up the great work, Katie!

Bee Cave:Joyce Luo- Joyce always has a smile on her face. She listens well and has been improving her strokes by taking the feed back the coaches have given her and put it into action. Joyce keeps her effort level up for the whole 45 minutes and has become stronger for it. Keep up the great work Joyce!

Technique and Fitness

Cedar Park:Riley Fuller and Bella Siu - These two swimmers have joined the T/F group, and come to practice with enthusiasm and great spirit. Riley took my suggestions to help him with his backstroke flip turn. He applied my advice and BAM, he nailed it. Bella swims with us once a week, and really is the little racer. She really knows how to pace herself, depending on the stroke. She always asks questions when needed, and pays rapt attention in practice. Great job you two, thanks for being a part of NITRO, and we’ll see you at the pool.

Bee Cave:Hammad Masood- Recently he has really stepped up his game at practice. I am seeing solid improvement in his flip turns and freestyle. All of his hard work in practice is starting to pay off. Keep up the great work!

Silver

Cedar Park:Molly Sparrow- Molly is a VERY hard worker and is looking for new ways to become a better swimmer each and every day. Molly is full of surprises and swims breaststroke and butterfly as if she’s 5 feet tall! Molly is well on her way to big achievements — keep it up!

Bee Cave:Brooke Brockman- Brooke is making huge improvements with her technique every week. Brooke is a fast learner & hard worker. We are so happy to have Brooke on our silver team. Great job Brooke!

Advanced Silver

Cedar Park:Ellie Rice- Ellie is a new addition to the Advanced Silver group, and has been working her hardest to make every interval and every set, no matter how challenging. This week she broke through and finished a set that was on a very tough interval-one that I don’t think she could have made two weeks ago. She’s a great of example of hard work paying off! Nice job Ellie!

Bee Cave:Alay Shah- Since day one with Advanced Silver, Alay has shown us that he wants to work hard. He gives 100% every practice and never lets up. At times that has interfered with his stroke development but, day by day he has taken corrections and made adjustments. I think back now to his freestyle even 4 months ago and there is no comparison. Keep up the great work Alay!

Gold

Cedar Park:Anthony Luo - Anthony has been quietly kicking butt and taking names in practice. He is such a great technique swimmer and is always improving on that technique and applying it to his everyday swimming. I look forward to seeing what Anthony will do at the meet this weekend.

Bee Cave:Kylie Ballard- Kylie has stepped up her level of training recently and is showing great improvement in the water. She is a tremendous athlete all around, and is always encouraging her teammates. Her glowing personality is infectious to others! Great job Kylie!

Looking for an alternative to the typical Austin, TX Summer Swim League?

Nitro Swimming has it’s own Summer Rec Swim Program!

Nitro offers two four-week summer swim options for those families who are looking for the best swim instruction anywhere, professional coaching from Nitro’s own USA Swimming Coaches (the #1 swim program in Texas), but who want their weekends with no swim meet commitments!

We gear the practices to a more “recreational” type of swimmer and they are offered on Monday through Thursday in June as well as July.

Our first session will be June 4th-28th; and our second session will be July 2nd-26th (the July session will include Friday, July 13th and Friday, July 20th to make up for being off July 4th and 5th).

Parents love this option due to no registration fees (just one price per session), great coaching, Mon-Thur swim practices – weekends are free to do whatever they want to do, we’re still indoors, and we offer a mid day option as well as an after work option.

We have a fun small meet at the end of each session, all the kids receive a special Nitro t-shirt, and the improvements shown over the 4 weeks are astounding.

The only requirements for entrance to this program: Must be able to complete one length (25 yards) of side breathing freestyle and backstroke. Several of our current Nitro USA families started with the four week summer swim options. Be sure to tell your non-Nitro friends about us – they will love this!

Click on the following link to find out more and to register.

Swimmer of the Week for April 2nd – April 7th, 2012

Intro to Nitro

Cedar Park: Katie Zografos and Kennedy Diamond- Both of these little ladies took on a big challenge for any Intro swimmer this weekend at the Nitro at the Races, the 100 IM!! One length of each stroke, three wall exchanges and two very brave girls. Katie and Kennedy were more than capable of the 100 IM and in the meet they showed it! I am so very proud to be their coach, way to go ladies! Way to go!!

Bee Cave: Intro Swimmers at the Meet!-This week I would like to congratulate all of the Intro swimmers that swam at the meet this weekend. They all did a wonderful job, and made me proud.

Bronze

Cedar Park:Ryanne McDaniel- Over the course of the last few weeks, Ryanne has been tremendously brave in conquering her fear of diving off the diving blocks. She has developed a terrific block start and used this past weekend’s Nitro at the Races meet to show it off. Ryanne had a number of excellent swims and we’re so proud of her persistence and work ethic. GO GIRL!

Bee Cave: Finn Henry- Finn is a great swimmer to coach. He listens well and has been making great strides in the Bronze group. He really pays attention to his strokes and takes corrections easily. If there is a kick set, I can be sure to find him out in the front of the pack. Keep up the great work Finn!

Technique and Fitness

Cedar Park:Jessica Ding & Nathan Depta - Jessica always show up to practice with and incredible attitude. She has been with the T/F group for some time now, and I use her to demonstrate many swimming elements for the newer swimmers. She is always willing to go the extra mile and help out the group. Nathan swims once a week on Friday’s. The pool can sometimes be a little cool for him, but after a few minutes he adjusts, and the other swimmers really enjoy the energy he brings to the pool. Great job last week you two, thanks for being a part of NITRO, and we will see you at the pool.

Bee Cave:Kalan Koleber- He’s a great lane leader when he comes to practice. Has a great attitude when he is challenged by certain sets. This past weekend he entered the swim meet and shined. All of his hard work paid off. Great work Kalan!

Silver

Cedar Park:Aditya Tewari - Aditya is on a mission to be the best swimmer in the group and in the process he’s challenging those around him to be better! Aditya loves to race, and we’re sure that his attitude in practice will result in great times at future meets. Keep up the good work Aditya!

Bee Cave: John Leeds- John is probably one of the nicest, most polite kids I have ever known. His do-good attitude translates in the water with a consistent positive attitude, always working the hardest he can, and encouraging others around him. John had a fantastic first swim meet of the season at Saturday’s Nitro at The Races. We are so proud of John! Keep up the great work!

Advanced Silver

Cedar Park:Lindsey Hitt- Lindsey has come to practice over the last week with a new fire and enthusiasm for swimming. We’re all excited to see where this takes her at the first long course meet in a few weeks. Keep up the great work Lindsey!

Bee Cave:Noah Lightfoot- Noah really showed me something this week. He said that the address by Anthony Robles at the Nitro’s really spoke to him and inspired him to worker harder. Noah showed me what that looked like from him throwing himself back into the forefront of the group after a season riddled with absences largely due to illness. Noah is great to have on deck and a natural leader. I’m looking forward to seeing more of this focused and re-dedicated Noah Lightfoot. Keep it up the great work Noah!

Gold

Cedar Park: Ashlyn Carroll- Ashlyn is a fairly new swimmer in our Gold group, but she has wasted no time pushing herself and working on making herself much better. Ashlyn has really improved herself by pushing intervals and making them, that she did not know she could do. Excited to see her at the first meet of the season.

Bee Cave:Camille Sweeney- Camille has shown an impressive “never give up” attitude the last few weeks. When the tough gets going, Camille gets swimming. Her attitude has directly affected her swimming, helping her become stronger & faster each passing week. Camille proves that a little determination goes a long way! Very proud of you Camille!

Swimmers of the Week/Month

Intro to Nitro

Cedar Park:Connor Silva- Connor is one of our newer swimmers but if you saw him in class you would never know. He listens and learns quickly, already picking up and understanding the hand signals for the sets and all the lingo. Connor is not afraid to try anything either, always ready for whatever we have to challenge Intro with. Welcome, way to go and keep it up Connor!

Bee Cave:Blythe Rhodes- Blythe is an amazing little girl and she had some really awesome practices these last few weeks in which she really stepped up to the plate as a leader. This last week we were focusing on everything breaststroke. Blythe is always one to listen well, but this last week she has not only been listening well but also been really focusing on doing each and every drill exactly as we describe. Because of this her breaststroke looks phenomenal. She is also a great team player, always helping out her fellow “Intro’s” to understand what we are doing and encouraging them to do their best. Keep on smiling Blythe, we love having you in our group!

Bronze

Cedar Park:Emily Williams- Emily has been with the Bronze group for a while, but recently turned a corner. Emily has noticeably started taking constructive critiques on technique and form in stride. She is learning the value of doing things the right way the first time and focusing on the task at hand. We love to see her smiling and moving up in her lane – which is much to the credit of her increased focus and attention to detail. Thanks for applying yourself Emily! We’re excited to see you continue to improve!

Bee Cave:Paige Liverman- Paige impresses us time and again. She is a tough swimmer with a real zeal for swimming. Paige does a great job listening and we can really tell that she wants to be here. Keep up the great work Paige!

Technique and Fitness

Cedar Park:Alyson Jia & Shashank Kashyap - Leading a lane requires some extra effort from the swimmers. Not only do they have to swim, they need to watch the clock, listen to directions, do the right workout, make sure they don’t do something incorrectly, because at times, the others follow. Shashank did all of the above and stepped up his game this week. Alyson walked into practice on Saturday, and noticed that the pool was set up 50 long course meters. It’s not an easy distance to swim, if you’re fairly new to the sport. She did a great job with her endurance today. Nice job you two, thanks for being a part of NITRO, and we’ll see you at the pool.

Bee Cave:Carolyn Dunlap- Carolyn is one of our lane leaders in the older kids group on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5pm. Not only does she lead by example but is very reliable. She is developing into a very mature swimmer who comes in with a smile every day, even if she does get pushed to her limits in practice by Coach Megan, Carlye and I. This past Thursday we had a competition day with our TF group. We sent our four older kids to lanes with the younger children as team leaders. On every drill and 25 Carolyn was making sure her teammates were listening to the coaches, guided, and cheered on every single swimmer in her lane. Way to step it up Carolyn. You deserve the recognition.

Silver

Cedar Park:Jasmine Cho- Jasmine has done a great job over the last week of improving her kicking, backstroke, and butterfly. She’s taken a great approach to learning how to swim the strokes properly. Looking forward to upcoming meets to see how she will do. Great job Jasmine!

Bee Cave:Mason Wong- Mason is always excited to be at swim and comes early every day. He has a competitive spirit and shines on “competition day”, excelling at all he does to show off his awesome technique! His breakouts are outstanding! Keep up the great work Mason.

Advanced Silver

Cedar Park:Addie Armistead - She’s had a fantastic week of practices, always has a great smile on her face and is a joy to coach. Great job this week Addie!

Bee Cave: Jessica Gillman- Jessica hasn’t been with us long, but she is already showing that she belongs with Advanced Silver. She listens and responds well to stroke correction. Jessica always has a smile on her face and it is obvious to the coaches that she wants to be here. Keep up the great work and attitude Jessica!

Gold

Cedar Park: Melissa Bartlett- Melissa “Melish the Fish” has shown incredible work ethic for quite some time now, even though we all week we worked on strokes that were not her favorites, she continued to push herself to become better. Of course she is always smiling during practice and is a great friend to many in the Gold group. Keep up the great work!

Bee Cave:Keren Makhervaks- Keren is not only a sweet soul, but an extremely hard worker. Always striving to do better & improve, her work ethic & discipline is second to none and she is an absolute joy to coach. Keep up the great work Keren!

Swimmer of the Month – March

Cedar Park

High School Training:Joel Gibson- Joel has done a great job over the last few weeks of improving his stroke as well as enjoying tough workouts. He goes for the harder intervals and rocks the sets. He is a easy going guy who brings the group up. Looking forward to seeing some good results in the future for Joel. Keep the hard work up man!

TAGS 2:Cole Perley- This month’s swimmer is someone who as re-dedicated himself to the sport and has been enjoying the results of his higher level of fitness. Cole also acts as a mentor to some of the newer swimmers and is making big improvements in his swimming technique as well. It’s been a great month, we’re looking forward to this summer!

TAGS 1:Karli Hemstreet- Karli had an outstanding TAGS meet, winning high point for 13-14 girls. She finished up the month with some great swims at the Canadian Olympic Trials.

Senior: Emily Severe- Emily took a four month hiatus this winter to focus on school work, but returned to us this past month and we could not be happier. We want to affirm her dedication to getting back in the water and her commitment to improving. As anyone that has taken time off knows, getting back into the groove can be rough! But Emily has been steady in her attendance and diligent in her work. Keep it up Emily! Your hard work will pay off.

Sectional:Christian Carroll & Alexandra Manasso- “I am more afraid of an army of 100 sheep lead by an LION, than an army of 100 lions lead by a sheep.” TALLEYRAND.” A new coach with a new group of kids needs leadership and the first task is trying to find the people who are going to create the culture that will be productive to the group and in a larger sense the team. Since I’ve been on the deck with S1 these two kids have said to me with their attitude and work ethic, “Coach, IT WILL BE ME”. TO BOTH OF YOU, “IT’S AN HONOR TO BE YOUR COACH’.

Bee Cave

Senior 2:Amanda Burton- Amanda is new to the group and her infectious smile and personality has won over both her coach and her teammates. Keep it up Amanda!

Senior 1/TAGS:Fey Matamoros- Fey has started off the new season where she left off the end of the Short Course season – swimming well! A multi-sport athlete, it is great to see Fey take her athleticism into the water as we do a lot of technique work. She starts off the new season with outstanding practices, and is always open to stroke adjustments. Keep it up Fey!

National Group Swimmer of the Month ( March )- Unbelievable work ethic plus a passion to get better helped make Christina Jonsson both the Most Improved NG swimmer for the year as well as the NG swimmer for March. CJ is a tone setter for the group, is becoming a vocal leader and has an unquestioned work ethic. It has been fun watching her improve so rapidly but that improvement is in conjunction with her training habits as well. Way to go CJ!!!!
